Title: Welcome: the start of Economicate!

You are currently looking at the first days of Economicate, a forum for everything Economics. I will be doing all I can to create some activity here - please do what you can too; invite friends and colleagues and make some posts of your own!

As an Economics undergraduate, I think there's an absence of a major internet forum where people can discuss, debate and develop a broad understanding of Economics amongst a large number of other economists.

While a number of smaller "help with Economics" type forums exist, I have never come across one that generally encourages people to casually discuss and debate (and in the process learn) various aspects of the subject.

I do think blogs are an excellent medium, but they're pretty inefficient for encouraging people to discuss economics on a large scale: They're relatively disconnected pockets of thought, rather than a single focal point for discussion. I don't see this forum replacing blogs - in fact I see it as a potential place for economists to publicise their blogs by including a link in their profile or signature. But I do believe it's time for a single, neutral forum that facilitates free discussion between economists of all backgrounds.
